I’ve been tagged… March 20, 2008

Wow! I’ve never been tagged before! Thanks Jen!

  1. The rules of the game get posted at the beginning.
  2. Each player answers the questions about themselves.
  3. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog.

What I was doing 10 years ago:

  • I was 14 and in 8th grade and dying to be in high school!
  • Dating Andrew Strickland (and we are incredible friends now!)

Five things on my to-do list today:

  • Finish work (as you can tell, I am VERY busy today) 😉
  • Blog about something interesting
  • Eat at my parents’ for dinner
  • Do laundry
  • Clean the dishes/kitchen – wow all of those sound very intriguing…don’t you want to be me??

Snacks I enjoy:

  • 100 calorie snack packs…I’m loving the Cheetos kind, but I’ll eat any of them.
  • Chips and salsa from Chili’s – me too Jen! My fave

  • Chocolate

Things I would do if I were a billionaire:

  • Sell our condo and buy a house
  • Pay off my husband’s school loans

Five of my bad habits:

  • Biting my nails

Chasing my Lions March 17, 2008

We just finished a teaching series called “Chase the Lion”, based on the book and study by Mark Batterson. It was a challenging series, to say the least. At all of our campuses, we allowed our congregation to write their “lion” (problem, obstacle, etc) on the wall and start chasing it! (see pictures here and here – thanks Beca & Erin!).

I wrote two lions on that wall. I won’t say what they are yet, but I’m trying to chase them down now. It will be extremely hard, maybe a little painful and very scary, but with God’s help, I know I can chase that lion into a pit on a snowy day and come out of the pit a conquerer!

Now I’m just trying not to worry about it…

Do you worry? March 10, 2008

I do, a lot. More than I would like. I hate it about myself. How I wish I could be one of those care-free people!! I think “worry” runs in my family. It’s definitely hereditary. My Mom is a worrier, as is my Grandma, my Dad and several others in my family.

I’m worrying about a certain person in my life right now and it almost brings me to tears to even think about it. I’ve finally decided to pray for her every time I worry about it. I’m not in control, God is and He’s going to watch out for my friend and keep her safe.

I read this blog a lot and you should, too! I especially identified with this post on worry. Thanks Cindy!

Do you vote for AI? March 6, 2008

I read a lot of posts about people’s opinions on the American Idol contestants. My question is: does anyone actually call and vote???

The most popular name in the 80s March 5, 2008

I was born in the early 80s (1983 to be exact) and apparently my Mom must not have been aware that every Mother of the 80s named their daughter Jennifer. It’s a shame they didn’t have internet back then. She could’ve easily found out that the number 1 most popular girl name in 1983 was Jennifer (my middle name is also on the list).

Growing up, I could never be just “Jennifer”. I had to be “Jennifer R” or “JR” and later, our next-door neighbors named me “Jenn”. Using Jenn is easier for me because it sets me apart from the other Jennifers who spell their name with one “n”. Or those others who ended up calling themselves Jenny or Jenna.

Can I get some agreement on this? I know some of the other names on that list can agree…Jessica, Melissa, Ashley, Amanda, Sarah, Stephanie…(I have at least one friend with every name on that list, by the way!).

I’ve always wanted a more “unique” name. Hopefully I can help my own kids out with that.

So, tell me. What’s your name? Do you share it with lots of people? Tell me your story.

Embracing Accusations

I’m a big Shane & Shane fan. I have all of their albums and have seen them in concert several times. I love their lyrics and the harmonies of their voices together just sends me to a whole other place. This song is one of those. When I listen to it I feel like I can do anything. The song is encouraging, haunting, and it blesses me every time I listen to it.

If you haven’t heard of Shane & Shane, browse around iTunes for their stuff. You won’t be disappointed.

Here’s the lyrics:

The father of lies, coming to steal kill and destroy
All my hopes of being good enough.
I hear him saying, “cursed are the ones who can’t abide.”

He’s right, hallelujah, he’s right.

The devil is preaching the song of the redeemed,
That I am cursed and gone astray.
I cannot gain salvation
Embracing accusation.

Could the father of lies be telling the truth of
God to me tonight?
That if the penalty of sin is death, then death is mine.
I hear him saying, “cursed are the ones who can’t abide.”

He’s right, hallelujah, he’s right.

The devil is preaching the song of the redeemed,
That I am cursed and gone astray.
I cannot gain salvation
Embracing accusation.

The devil’s singing over me an age old song
That I am cursed and gone astray.
Singing the first verse so conveniently over me,
He’s forgotten the refrain…
Jesus saves!
